Personally, I don't see this as a big deal as I make do pretty well with contacts. So to me bringing over all the labels would be a bad deal. Maybe if you wanted the option to convert them to tags... I don't know, but it doesn't seem like a real problem compared to the reverse side of it.
I already made a new post (https://goo.gl/XWQm8p) before picked up on this thread (and don't know how to move it here), but the core issue is that you cannot update a Followup contact from Google Contacts page or app.
Possibly, the contacts could be left in google Contacts to begin with and grouped (and pulled into Followup) based on their label. That is, rather than doing an "import" to get Followup started, it cold instead just label selected contacts with "Followup" label.

Hello,
This feature is really important to me because I already use google contacts as CRM on one of my activities.
And I already have a lot of "labels" used. It would save me a lot of time!
Thank you

Cody - Ron is correct when he uses the word labels. I use the tags in FollowUp to indicate interest in particular products/activities. Adding in labels, or substituting them, would complicate things for me as I have dozens and dozens of labels that reflect close to 8 years of working in Gmail. Managing the complexity would be really important if this feature gets implemented - IMO.

Actually the correct name would be "labels" to match the new google contacts or preview..
